Jeonju. It was the first large Western-style bell anyone in the district
had seen, and, according to the plaque at its foot, its sound carried about
20 ri, roughly 8 kilometers. Thirty-six years later Japanese police
took it for the war effort. The tower is still there, with a replacement
bell hung after liberation.
