Hanji: The Korean Paper That Outlasts the Book

The Louvre has used hanji, the Korean paper made from mulberry bark, to restore a nineteenth-century Bavarian desk. Italy’s national conservation institute has certified it as a restoration material, and the Vatican Museums use it.

None of that is marketing. It lasts because of how it is made, and the critical difference comes down to which way the papermaker’s hands move.

Why hanji Korean paper outlives ordinary paper

Ordinary machine paper is acidic. It attacks itself, and two centuries is about the limit before it becomes brittle and crumbles. Hanji is neutral, and the working figure is a thousand years or more — not a projection, but an observation from documents that are still legible.

Two things get it there. The material, and the motion.

The material: paper mulberry, cut in winter

The lye is doing something specific. Korea Heritage Service guidance puts it plainly: it removes the impurities inside the bark that cause discoloration and weaken durability. Modern paper uses chemical bleaching, which is faster and leaves the acidity behind. Wood-ash lye and sunlight are slower and leave nothing behind at all.

Then someone picks out the specks by hand. That step has a name and no shortcut.

The motion: one handle, not two

Here is the part that decides everything, and it is a story about occupation as much as craft.

Oebal-tteugi (외발뜨기) is the Korean method. The screen hangs from a single cord and the papermaker swings it front to back and side to side. Fibers land in crossing directions, layer over layer, and lock into a mesh.

Ssangbal-tteugi (쌍발뜨기) is the two-handled method that arrived with Japanese washi technique during the colonial period. The screen sits between two frames and moves in one plane. It is easier, faster, and produces paper whose fibers mostly lie the same way.

Paper with fibers running one way tears along that way. Paper with fibers crossing has no preferred direction to fail in — which is why you can hear the difference when you tear a corner, and why conservators want the Korean kind.

Dochim: the step nobody else does

After drying, traditional hanji is beaten. Sheets are stacked and struck until the surface compacts and flattens.

Korea Heritage Service describes dochim as a surface-finishing technique not found in other countries. It raises density and smoothness, which is what makes hanji take ink without feathering while staying strong enough to survive a brush.

It is also why cheap hanji feels wrong. Skip the beating and you have paper made of the right fiber that behaves like the wrong one.

What this means if you are buying

Ask which way it was made. Oebal costs more and it is the one worth carrying home. A shop selling serious hanji will know the answer immediately; one selling craft-market stock may not.

Colored hanji is a different product. Dyed sheets — the stacks of reds, indigos and yellows that photograph so well — are made for craft use rather than conservation. Beautiful, and not what the Vatican is buying.

Everything above is about the raw sheet. If a finished object — a lamp, a fan, a box — is what you actually want, that is a different shopping trip, with its own shops and its own prices.

If you would rather buy from home, hanji sheets and hanji craft kits sell abroad, though the listings rarely say which method made them.

Check the listing’s materials field for “mulberry.” That confirms actual hanji rather than a coated or printed substitute — real listings from Korean sellers state it plainly. It will not tell you oebal from mechanized, though; that distinction essentially never appears in a listing, so ask the seller directly if it matters to you. Where to see it

Jeonju is the place to go, and it is already on most itineraries for the hanok village. The Hanji Museum sits in the same city, and the region has been a paper center for centuries.

Early October adds a reason beyond the usual one: the Jeonju Hanji Culture Festival runs at the Korea Traditional Culture Center, five minutes on foot from the hanok village — fashion shows built from paper, craft competitions, and hands-on papermaking beyond what the museum offers year-round. A different week from the city’s bibimbap festival, and a much shorter walk from where you are probably already staying.

Wonju is the other one — a paper town with a hanji theme park where you can make a sheet yourself for a few thousand won.

Seoul has the workshops rather than the mills. Paper-craft classes turn up alongside the lacquer and mother-of-pearl studios, and what they teach is assembly rather than papermaking — still worth an afternoon, but a different thing.

The master designation system applies here as it does to lacquer: hanji has designated heritage holders, and a sheet made by one is a different purchase from a sheet made in a workshop.
