A festival built entirely on a wordplay — Gimcheon isn't known for gimbap, but 'gimbap-cheonguk' (gimbap heaven) sounds like the city's name, and the city leaned into it.
Who it suits: Food-festival collectors who want the odd, small-city one — gimbap isn't actually a Gimcheon specialty, the festival runs on the name's pun.
What to expect
The festival sprawls across more ground than it used to. Gimcheon announced that the 2026 edition runs three days, one more than last year, and spreads over Jikji Culture Park and Samyeongdaesa Park with a new eco-park area added. Plan for walking between zones. The thing to plan around is the queue. The city named the wait to order gimbap as last year’s biggest complaint. For 2026 it said it built an ordering system with Kakao Pay to cut that wait, and it reported shuttle buses (around 60 were mentioned in press reports) and a ‘picnic taxi’ service to ease the traffic. We have not tried either, so treat both as intentions until you see them on the day. What you buy. The city planned about 80 vendors in four groups: gimbap, snack food, Gimcheon desserts, and flea-market or hands-on booths. Event listings that still carry last year’s programme mention stage performances, a first-birthday-style ‘dol-jabi’ fortune game, a gimbap maze and a gimbap bouncy castle, but those are 2025 items and the 2026 list was still being updated when we checked. Outside the big cities, wifi is not something to plan around. Shuttle stops, stage times and the day's program are posted on the organizer's Korean-language page or a Naver Map pin, and they change on the day. A Korean eSIM is the cheapest way to have it working before you land.
