National Museum of Korea: Free, and Almost Never Closed

Seoul’s palaces close one day a week and they do not agree on which day. The National Museum of Korea closes three days a year, costs nothing, and stays open until nine twice a week.
That combination makes it the most reliable fixed point in a Seoul itinerary, and it is the thing to reach for when a closing day has ruined the plan.

Compare that with the palaces, where Gyeongbokgung closes Tuesday and the others close Monday. If a closing day has emptied your morning, this is where to go.

Two of those deserve attention.
The Wednesday and Saturday evenings are the useful ones. Museums that stay open past dinner are rare, and the building at night with the reflecting pond is worth the trip on its own.
The grounds open at seven in the morning and stay open until ten at night — outside the galleries’ hours entirely. That is a park with a view of Namsan, free, before anything else in the city has opened.
Admission is free, with one exception
Permanent galleries and the Children’s Museum cost nothing. Special exhibitions are ticketed, and there are usually several running at once.
The distinction matters because the permanent collection is the reason to come. A special exhibition is a bonus, not the visit.
Language
The museum publishes guidebooks as PDFs in English, Chinese and Japanese, downloadable before you go — worth doing on hotel wifi rather than at the door.

The museum shop question
The shop sells the museum’s own product line, and it has become a destination in its own right — Korean visitors queue for it, and pieces sell out.
Buy what you want while you are standing there. There is an online shop, but we could not confirm whether it ships internationally: the site is JavaScript-rendered and we could not read its shipping terms, and we are not going to guess about something that decides whether you carry a box home.

Fitting it in
The museum is in Yongsan, away from the palace cluster in Jongno, so it is a deliberate trip rather than something you pass.
On a Monday, when Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung are all shut, this plus Gyeongbokgung makes a full day.
Come Tuesday, when Gyeongbokgung is shut, this plus Changdeokgung’s English tour does the same.
For Wednesday or Saturday, save it for the evening and spend the daylight somewhere that closes at six.
Getting there is straightforward on the subway — fares and the tap-out rule are worth knowing first — and the address is a ro rather than a gil, so for once Korean addressing is not the problem. A Korean eSIM still helps for everything after.
