Gangneung: The Coffee Coast Two Hours from Seoul
The KTX reached Gangneung in 2017, but English guides still write it up as a slog. A beach town with a real coffee history, and a house on two banknotes.

Traditional Korean houses you can sleep in — ondol floors, paper windows, courtyards. What the booking sites don't tell you.
A hanok is a timber-framed house built around a courtyard, with heated floors and paper-screened doors. Sleeping in one is a different proposition from looking at one, and the booking-site photographs do not tell you which.
The honest starting point is what nobody tells you about a hanok stay — drawn from Korean-language reviews, which complain about things English listings never mention.

Busan's metro charges by zone, not distance, and Haeundae sits on the far side of the line. Two days, what they cost, and what the day passes are worth.
Seoul's three hanok districts were built for three different classes and still behave that way. One of them now fines tourists for being out after 5pm.
Seoul's hanok districts are small, expensive and now regulated. Jeonju has 735 hanok in one place, 203 places to sleep, and nobody fining you at 5pm.
English listings show the courtyard. Korean reviews talk about the walls, the bathroom and the mosquitoes. What a hanok stay is actually like at night.
